Born in Germany, Dieter Dangler (Christian Bell) dreamed of flying a plane and flying into the sky since he was a child. When he grew up, he immigrated to the United States with his family, joined the military and became a real pilot. Dieter then joined the Navy in the Vietnam battlefield. On the way to the mission, the Dieter plane was unfortunately shot down by ground artillery fire from the Vietnamese army. He narrowly escaped death, but was eventually captured by the enemy and tortured. Dieter was taken to a prisoner of war camp in Laos, where several fellow American troops were present.
